UP man arrested for 'spying' for Pakistan

The Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) arrested Shehzad Wahab, a resident of Rampur district, on suspicion of espionage and involvement with Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). Shehzad was taken into custody from Moradabad during a nationwide operation targeting individuals allegedly engaged in spying activities for Pakistani intelligence agencies. The ATS had been monitoring him based on credible intelligence inputs regarding his involvement in smuggling and espionage.

Investigations showed that Shehzad had traveled to Pakistan multiple times over several years. During these trips, he was involved in the illegal cross-border trade of goods such as cosmetics, spices, and clothing. Authorities said this smuggling operation acted as a cover for his espionage work. He maintained direct communication with ISI operatives and provided them with sensitive information related to India’s national security.

Further inquiry revealed that Shehzad facilitated the transfer of funds to Pakistani agents operating within India. He was also involved in recruiting individuals from Rampur and other parts of Uttar Pradesh. These recruits were sent to Pakistan under the pretext of smuggling or seeking employment. Visa and travel documents for these individuals were reportedly arranged with assistance from ISI operatives.

In addition, Shehzad allegedly supplied Indian SIM cards to ISI agents, which could have been used to support their communication and covert activities. The ATS registered a case against him under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita related to espionage and national security. He was produced before a magistrate and is currently undergoing legal proceedings.

The ATS continues its investigation into Shehzad’s activities as part of a broader crackdown on espionage networks allegedly linked to Pakistani intelligence. The case highlights ongoing concerns regarding cross-border smuggling and recruitment activities facilitating intelligence operations.
